MFA THESIS EXHIBITION

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW IT FEELS TO PRESS YOUR HANDS INTO EARTH?

This body of work is a manifestation of the connections I observe between human and nonhuman life on Earth; a small attempt at understanding my place in the ecosystem and the lineage I share with the world around me in the context of my personal history. Utilizing soils collected from specific locations in the state of Texas as a primary medium, I explore questions around belonging and displacement, mythological vs. historical memory, and the cyclical nature of life. Physical processes are paralleled across sculptural works and methods of printmaking, emphasizing a kinship of experience across individual pieces. In addition to soil, other familiar and elemental materials (textiles, plants, photographs, ceramics, rocks) are used to construct simultaneously literal and figurative compositions which make visual reference to erosion, memory, distance, and different states of being.
